African clothing is simply traditional clothes worn in Africa by Africans.................. well, until it started going global. These days African clothing can be found in almost every country, being worn by people from all walks of life.  African clothing is mostly made of vibrant, colourful and bold prints and styles vary immensely.

Dashiki

Buy dashiki shirt
The dashiki is a colourful garment for men and boys that covers the top half of the body. It has formal and informal versions and varies from simple draped clothing to fully tailored suits. Some also have beautiful embroidery around the neck and sleeve areas.
The name Dashiki is derived from the Yoruba word danshiki which means shirt. It is usually worn with a hat called "Kufi" or "Koufia", and a pair of pants called Sokoto which is the Yoruba word for trousers.

ASO OKE

Aso oke fabric, (pronounced ah-SHAW-okay) is a hand loomed cloth woven by the Yoruba people of south west Nigeria. Aso oke means top cloth in the English language. Usually woven by men, the fabric is used to make men's gowns, called Agbada, women's wrappers, called iro, and men's hats, called fila.
When people speak of an aso oke, they are usually referring to the traditional Yoruba women's garment. It consists of four parts:
  • Buba - Yoruba blouse
  • Iro - a wrap skirt
  • Gele - head tie
  • Iborun or Ipele - shawl or shoulder sash

Boubou / Bubu

Buy boubou/kaftan
Boubou is one of the names for a flowing wide sleeved robe. It is usually decorated with intricate embroidery. This can be worn by both male and female. It also known as kaftan but this refers more to female boubou.

The grand boubou/bubu is a flowing wide sleeved robe worn by men in much of West Africa, and to a lesser extent in North Africa. It is known by various names, depending on the ethnic group wearing them: agbada (Yoruba, Dagomba), babban riga (Hausa), k'sa or gandora (Tuareg) darra'aMaghrebi Arabic, grand boubou (in various Francophone West African countries) and the English term of gown. The Senegalese boubou, a variation on the grand boubou described below, is also known as the Senegalese kaftan. The female version worn in some communities is also known as a m'boubou or kaftan.
